 Der Rosenkavalier
Author: Sylvain

Hi, I have just learned that I will be playing this opera in a few months. I have three questions for the pit orchestra players out there:
1- Do you have any recommendation on a recording or DVD of the opera? Liquorice, did you record it?
2- Do you know if there is an opera excerpt book that has the main clarinet licks in this?
3- Is there a place where I can get the clarinet parts?

Thanks!

There is a whole set of Strauss orchestral excerpts that are very extensive for all intruments (1st, 2nd clarinets, bass clarinet, basset horn) and include much from Rosenkavalier. They were published by Foerstner, but may be reprinted by another firm (Schott, maybe?)

Funny thing is that the Foerstner books don't include the famous laendler/waltz clarinet solo from the first act (the main lick, I suppose).

Complete parts can be ordered from Kalmus.

As for recordings - I like the old Kleiber recording - very Viennese.

My favorite DVD of this is the Kleiber with Barbra Bonney. It is an amazing performance.

As to performance: I have played it a few times and it is HARD. Get ready for a lot of C clarinet parts that are just nasty. If you have a C clar then it might be easier. But after your hard work you will be priveledged to play one of the most beautiful operas ever written. You are lucky.

Larryb-
Obviously DAVE's "the Kleiber with Barbara Bonney" is Carlos Kleiber and amazing to boot. Is your "old Kleiber recording" Carlos or Erick? Just curious.

vin,

I was referring the Erich Kleiber 1954 recording - Wiener Staatsoper/Wiener Phil w/Reining, Jurinac, Gueden, et al

I'm sure Carlos did well too - I just don't know it.

Sylvain, we have recorded Rosenkavalier, but I wasn't playing on it (we have two solo clarinetists). For a list of all our DVDs, see here:

It's a wonderful opera (one of many musicians favourites), and I also recommend the Carlos Kleiber recording. I must listen to Erich Kleiber's recording too!

Thank you all, I will get a hold of the parts and the Carlos Kleiber recording. I will also look at C clarinets, after all what better excuse can I have to buy a new instrument?

I think Karjan's performance of the whole work on EMI with the Philharmonica is historically the finest performance of the work..the cast..orchestra and performance outshine all others...

avoid the 67 Bernstein VPO recording with its weak cast.

I have an old vinyl featuring Schwartzkoff that I like but I don't recall the orchestra and conductor.
