Good Woodwind Shops in New York
Author: Iacuras

At the end of this year I will be graduating high school and going on to become a Clarinet Major in college (don't know which college yet). As a graduation present my parents are buying me a new clarinet. The only thing is, when you go to music shops where i live (denver) and ask to try out Pro clarinets they bring you an R-13, and a Noblet. Not exactly the selection I'm looking for. However, in a few weeks time, i'm taking a trip out to New York, and was looking for the names of good music shops that have a good selection of Pro clarinets to try. I'm looking for a place (or several) that carry Buffet, Selmer, Leblanc and Yamaha models. Any help is appreciated. thanks.

Weiner Music

http://www.weinermusic.com/

Call ahead, let them know when you are coming. Tell them what you want to try and they will have the clarinets set out, and adjusted for you to test...GBK

Weiner has a great selection and the great "New York" competative prices. The store front is actually Poppa's Music (looks like a typical drum store from the outside). I drove passed it at least three times!!!!

There was also mention on the board about the Yamaha store in Manhattan where the puchase price of a new CSG-H was $1790 after rebate (actually sale went over internet but the fellow walked out the door with his horn). DEFINITELY try the Yamaha CSG (either silver or Hamilton keys) they are WONDERFUL !!!

Happy hunting.

The good thing about firms that also have Internet sales is that you MAY be able to go there and select the instrument that you want and have specific horn shipped home to you, saving you the sales tax, which usually exceed the shipping costs, especially NY sales tax (Nassau county for Weiner).

Weiner's is definitely good.

1) If you can get to the Island, you may also want to check out:

Wright Music Inc
938 Port Washington Blvd
Port Washington NY 11050-2932
516-883-0043

They carry Selmer clarinets (which are hard to find). Jonathan Watkins is the President. He used to manage the WW&BW store in Manhattan (before it closed).

2) Also worth visiting is Roberto's on West 46th Street in Manhattan. They're good about letting you play instruments (mostly just Buffets on hand) and are friendly.

3) There's also the Yamaha Artist's Service at 689 Fifth Avenue. They have Yamaha clarinets on hand to try. Here's how Yamaha describes it on its website:

"Yamahas Band and Orchestral Atelier is located on the eleventh floor. A display room showcases the latest in professional brass and woodwind instruments. Adjacent to the display room is a full-service, state-of-the-art custom shop. It not only provides orchestral and professional musicians with unique customizations, it also offers quick repairs. Most importantly, the shop gives artists the opportunity to try prototypes of Yamahas latest professional instruments. Yamaha utilizes the response it obtains from the artist community to refine these products before they go into production."

Nobody's mentioned Sam Ash on W. 48th St. They have good prices, a tremendous selection of instruments and practice rooms where you can take 2 or 3 horns, etc. and blow to your heart's content. AND, there's a parking lot next door for out-of-towners.

"Jonathan Watkins is the President. He used to manage the WW&BW store in Manhattan (before it closed)."

Years ago Jonathan also managed Weiner's. The place has never been the quite same with him gone. He is a wonderful guy. He really will go out of his way to make sure you are satisfied and get all you need. He is a real asset to any place.

(This is not meant as a dig on Weiner's-- instead I wish to note that Jonathan brings something special to those places where he works. He did the same when he was at WW/BW in NY)

I Purchased my Buffet bass clarinet from Weiner.

He gave me the best price and the best treatment. Mark is the tech on site and he set the carinet up perfectly!

Thanks Fred and Mark.

I had wondered what happened to "Crazy Jonathan"--I bought things from Weiner when he was managing it back in the 80's--I'm really glad to know he's still in the business.

This maybe a bit off topic, but I personally would not recommend Jimmy Yan for custom work. I asked him to install a metal tenon reinforcement cap (like on the prestige Buffets) on my Bb R-13 years ago and he did a horrible job and almost messed up my instrument. I can only tell a tech so much and most of it is up to their knowledge and skill to get it right. The price was relativly low of under $50, but it was not worth it. The metal cap was not made nor installed correctly so that the bore ended up not matching correctly, and workmanship was poor. When I asked about the sloppy work afterwards, he only managed to adjust very little, which did not improve things. Had to have it done somewhere else to get it right. I never go back there anymore.

Sorry, Aures22, that you had a bad experience with Jimmy Yan.
I have had my many horns serviced by Jimmy for over 20 + years, and have never had a problem. Dozens of my students and friends go to Jimmy for their more difficult repairs, and have always been serviced well.
I am surprised at your post, as I have always found Jimmy to be friendly, cooperative, and most efficient with all of his repair work.
He is also an excellent barrel maker, and MP refacer. His talents are many.
