 San Francisco Principal result
Author: J. J.

The following was sent out by Clark Fobes on the klarinet mailing list:

The results of the Principal clarinet audition for the San Francisco Symphony were announced today. Two players have been "qualified". They are Carey Bell (Principal Clarinet of the SF Opera) and Greg Raden (Principal Clarinet of the Dallas Symphony).

These two players will be invited to play with the orchestra at some point
next season and each will play for two weeks. After that one candidate can
be appointed into a tenure track "probationary" position or the conductor
also has the option to reject both candidates.

Carey Bell is a great player, IMO. I've heard him a couple of times before and his sound is one of my favorites that I have ever heard in person.

Is the San Francisco Symphony orchestra better and pay more than the Dallas Symphony orchestra?

The pay is better; it is a more prestigious ensemble (I'm not going to say "better"); and, for many, a more enjoyable place to live.

Why would someone want to leave the 110-degree summers, tornadoes and the strip-mall sprawl of Dallas-Fort Worth for San Francisco?

The chances of them even considering hiring someone with less experience than Greg Raden or Carey Bell for a position of that profile are slim. Stories such as Ricardo Morales' are very rare, especially for a principal position in an orchestra of that caliber. Plus they are both fantastic players, and I'm sure whoever eventually fills that spot will be superb.

Speaking as a Dallasite who's been to many DSO concerts, Greg Raden is a *wonderful* clarinet player and we'd be very sorry to see him leave, but I suspect it's only a matter of time before he moves on to a more prestigious ensemble.
