Do any of you know of some orchestral pieces that actually have a 3rd clarinet part? I'm talking classical, not contemporary orchestral pieces. I'm not talking about Bass, I'm talking Bb/A clarinet.

I'd imagine Mahler, Stravinsky or Shostakovitch will have a fair amount of 3rd clarinet.

Well, for openers, Stravinsky "Fireworks", Shostakovich "Festive Overture", Holst "Planets", Berg Violin Concerto, Wagner "Ring" Cycle, Shostakovich 4th , at least one of the Bruckner Symphonies (can't remember exactly which one), Nielsen (can't rember which one of those either), Debussy "Iberia". Lot's more, I'm sure!

Some others which immediately come to mind:

William Grant Still - Afro-American Symphony
Mahler Symphony #1 and #9
Berg - Wozzek (includes 4th clarinet)
Stravinsky- Le Sacre Du Printemps
Nielsen - Symphony #4
Stravinsky - Symphony #1

...and many others ...GBK

The 3rd part on Mahler 1 is Eb/C/A/Bass. Currently rehearsing it. Quite a bit of cool stuff in it (aside from the 10 minutes of tacet in the first movement), but it requires a full set of orchestral clarinets.

A little off topic...but if I remember correctly, the Mahler 5 3rd part has Bass in Bb, Bass in A, Bb, A and C clarinets...

I imagine it would be quite theatrical walking on with that many instruments!
