 WW&BW tax & C clarinet music
Author: clarnibass
Date:   2006-01-25 10:02

I have a question about C clarinets. I searched the forum and found tons of information about different instruments and about other things but not about what I am looking for.
I would like to know what pieces (any type, orchestral, chamber, solo, non-classical) has a C clarinet part. I read that there are some pieces people argue if the C clarinet is really necessary, but that is irelevent, they would still count as having a C clarinet part even if they are usually transposed. Also if possible write the composer and piece name. I don't know many pieces by name so I might not know the composer if you just write the name of the piece.

Also since I'm opening a new thread, I have another question. I wanted to order from WW&BW and ordered to the same address I did many times before in NJ. Suddenly I see I need to pay tax. I never had to pay tax before. I emailed them about it and waiting for a reply now. Does anyone happen to know what is going on?

Thanks very much.

TAX? Jeez............

If they have a physical presence in your state than I could certainly see that. Possibly their other company music123.com (which was Zapfs and located in New Jersey) caused that to happen.

Anybody else in another state getting charged sales tax?

Unless Israel has been relocated into NJ I don't see that as much of a possibility ... ;)

I'm no expert, but I believe you always had to pay tax. Just because you didn't report it....well let's all be grateful that the IRS doesn't monitor the internet.

In New York State, there are now two options for out of state purchase tax reporting: either itemize on the state tax form, or the state assumes a certain percentage of income in out of state purchases and charges you accordingly.

As for C clarinet - there's tons of music written in C. Most notably, the theme and variations movement of Schubert's wind/string octet. In addition, there are numerous Mozart, Beethoven, Rossini, Verdi orchestral parts.

Israel? (music123 nor wwbw has a presence in israel that I'm aware of)

There has been much ballyhoo about not taxing internet commerce. (Congressional talks, etc)

They do have to tax if there is a physical store presence in the state of the purchaser. To my knowledge that hasn't changed (??)

David, it was a joke since I am in Israel so they obviously don't have a physical presence in my state :)

I received a reply from WW&BW so I'll quote: "Thank you for your email, as of January 1st, we are required to collect the sales tax."

That still wasn't clear if it's only for New Jersey or all states, so I checked by trying to ship to New York and there was no sales tax. I guess since Music123 is the same as WW&BW New Jersey is now required to pay sales tax also when ordering from WW&BW.

Anyway, I actually opened this thread more for the subjects of C clarinet parts/pieces.
Thanks Larry. I would be happy to have to specific pieces which have C clarinet parts.

Thanks.

Here's some off the top of my head:

- Schubert, Octet for strings and winds (theme and variations movement), but the Baerenreiter Edition also provides part transcribed for Bb.

- Martinu, quintet for 2 clarinets, violin, viola and cello. This is a bear to transpose, a c clarinet would be most helpful.

- Verdi, Overture to Luisa Miller. Great clarinet solo and some challenging ensemble sections, although I played it on the Bb and it worked.

My opinion: better to buy a basset horn than a C clarinet. I believe the basset horn should be every clarinetist's third instrument (after Bb, A). Too much great and essential music written for basset horn.

Oy. And at home you pay import duty plus VAT. Don't the USA and Israel have a double-tax treaty? Foreign goods usually are only taxed in the recipient's country.

Strange, strange.

Don't you have that famous "Uncle in America" who could procure these items for you?

Tictactux, reading your post I think I didn't explain clear enough.

I am in Israel, but that has nothing to do with the subject.
About a month ago I ordered from WW&BW to New Jersey and didn't need to pay sales tax. Now I wanted to order to the same address in New Jersey and it said I need to pay sales tax. Then I received this reply from WW&BW. After that I tried to order to New York and saw there is no sales tax.

The conclusion is that from Januray 1st people in both Indiana and New Jersey will need to pay sales tax when ordering from WW&BW. People in other states still don't. People in any other country also don't, but need to pay the local taxes as you said.

Hope this makes it more clear tictactux.

My guess would be that the laws in those states changed as of 1 Jan..

In RI, anything I buy from out of state that I didn't pay sales tax on has to be declared on my income tax, and the 7% paid at that time; they call it a "use tax". I don't keep detailed records of what I buy from out of state, but make a good-faith estimate of how much I've spent, and pay the tax on that.

WW&BW and Music123 merged - I'm guessing it was completely finalized just before Jan. 1; therefore as of the new fiscal year WW&BW & Music123 are the same company and have a physical presence in both states. I doubt the law changed in New Jersey.

Its interesting that our constitution calls for the federal government to regulate interstate commerce, but states are still greedily trying to tax catalogue and internet sales made in other places.

It's interesting also that "use tax" collection is essentially zero in most states ... if it wasn't, then there wouldn't be the drive to collect taxes on goods bought in other states.

Or would you rather a VAT?

It probably all depends on the percentage...

What happened was that music123 and wwbw were going to merge back about a year or so ago and literally over night the owner of WWBW decided to buy them out instead.

They didn't merge, music123 was taken over by wwbw.

Clarnibass:

Off the top of my head, a few other orchestral (and/or opera) composers who call for C clarinet:

Mahler
Strauss (Richard)
Berlioz (Symphonie Fantastique, Harold in Italy)
Herold (the solo in the Zampa Overture, e.g.)
Smetana (in "The Moldau," e.g.)

Some of Reicha's wind quintets are originally for C clarinet.

A few solo works:

Martino, "B,A,B,B,IT,T"
Hoffmeister - 4 of his six sonatas (duets)
Vanhal - at least one of his sonatas

Best regards,
jnk

Tchaikovsky - "Mozartiana"

Don't even consider playing it if you don't own a C clarinet ...GBK

Texas has a tax law that requires collection of tax on out of state sales for certain goods, but not all types. So far, they don't require tax on service work from out of state clients.

Mendholssen's Reformation Symphony changes from C clarinet to Bb a bit...not too hard to transpose tho.
