 moening barrel??
Author: toney

I am seeking some information on moening barrels, specifically original ones. By this I mean, not the ones that are currently mass produced by Buffet, but rather ones which were hand reamed on Mr. moening's belt in his shop in Philly way back.

Does anyone know how rare these items are and if available, where they are to be found? And if so, how much would one expect to pay for such an item?

I am curious because I have recently come into an original barrel which I use on A clarinet (at no cost from a retiring teacher!) and would like to get a matching one for Bb. Any help/knowledge on where to find a match if possible would be greatly appreciated and thanks!

I had one that came with a horn I got from Moennig in 1962.
The upper bore measured 0.599 and tapered to 0.584. BUT:
This measurement was taken after 40 years of service and years of using a swab, etc. The nominal is usually given at 0.589 to 0.584 in a 67mm barrel.
Remember that Moenning also cut the bell tenon by 2mm, so having an original might NOT necessarily be the best for you unless the rest of the horn is original.

(Disclaimer - I am a maker of the Forte' clarinet)
There is some background information by the late David Hite at :
http://www.jdhite.com/mouthpieces/shop1.htm about Moennig barrels and their dimensions. We extensively studied the dimensions and relationship of these dimensions transposed to other barrel tapers and playing characteristics when developing the new barrel for the Forte' and the taper relationships for the "Moennig Formula" hold relatively true to other barrel lengths - e.g. 64.5 mm for the Forte'. Some of the newer multiple taper barrels impart different characteristics which seem to add synergy to the effects of the classic Moennig design but are more instrument specific and not as generalizable in improved playing characteristics as his basic taper design.

Why don't you consider having someone custom make one for you following the original Moennig design with your specific Bb in mind? I can highly recommend Allan Segal (Alseg). I'm certain you would find an improvement in your overall tonal quality immediately.

The Moennig tapered barrel is one of the best as far as I am concerned. The improvement in the throat tones is one reason I've used that particular taper for the last 20 years.

I highly recommend Allan Segal - BB Sponsor - also. As previously noted he recently made a wonderful new Rosewood barrel for my Amati 675 "A" clarinet from scratch (since the tenon size is non-standard) and has also made me a beautiful and wonderfully sounding Cocobolo barrel for my Buffet Vintage R-13 which surpasses any of the other barrels in my collection run head to head. He is a pleasure to work with and communicating your equipment set-up, playing style and level, and your desire for a particular sound are wonderfully translated through his barrel making skill into your custom product.
(I neither receive nor give any monetary perks above professional rates from Clarinetconcepts)
