Any suggestions for a Region Band Diet? I've heard Ham and Cheese Sandwich, NO MILK, NO CAFFEINE, NO MSG, etc.. Any suggestions?

Clarify "Region Band". Is this marching? If so, all of the above; plus cut down on roughage and drink water every couple of hours even if you're not thirsty. If you're just playing in a concert hall, however, avoiding dairy is probably all you'd need to do. Only if you're particularly sensitive to MSG (headaches) should that matter. I must confess, I've never heard the merits of the ham & cheese sandwich as pertaining to a musician's diet, but they are pretty dank [wink]

I've never heard of this. I've done state band, regional orchestra, district band (back in high school) and never did any of this and did just fine (principal and ass. principal)! :^)

Another reason to stay away from MSG: it swells the fingers. My jeweler told me this after I **outgrew** my wedding band. He told me that after a good MSG-laden Chinese meal, your ring size can increase as much as one full size.

Looks more like an allergic reaction to me. If MSG had such an effect on the "big public", the FDA would probably ban it. (I don't mean to belitte anything, btw).

From personal experience I might add that radish salad combined with beer definitely isn't optimal. ;)

Don't drink any carbonated drink for a while before you play.

Burping makes the pitch go flat :)

As I recall, a large order of Popeye's, "Red Beans and Rice" proved a lethal combination on the bus. [right] v/r Ken

If this is your first HS TMEA Region tryout - yes lots of protein and no caffeine. Its the same kind of brain food you want for taking the SAT or something similar. The room can be intimidating if you let it - but its really a mind game. You will, however, have more than enough adrenaline to go around.

A good night's rest also goes without saying.

I never did, but you may want to bring a relaxing "tape" to listen to instead of listening to the other players. You do better not knowing how others played. The rules state that letters go in order, but each of the 3 etudes will start at a different 3rd of the alphabet.

However, I can't remember if iPods are allowed or not. Noise-cancelling headphones might be required to drown out the noise without disturbing your neighbors.

Honestly, Frito Pie was my favorite at the event. If you're eating at the event, stick to the chili or something similar - lots of protien. If you're eating before, Migas or something else egg-based at IHOP or someplace more genuine is probably about the right way to go.

I know it has changed a little, but District/Region IS the All-Area tryout. All-Area is the All-State tryout, then there's the All-State chair test. You can always check TMEA's website for your region for details:

yes, exactly.
the top 6 or so in each region make area, depending if you're 4a or 5a;
and the top students at the area auditions make state.
