Quick question. What is the orchestration of the Nielsen? The composition database does not list the specific instruments. From the recordings, I can definately pick up strings, snare, brass (rather horns in particular) , and I believe bassoons. Is it a full orchestra employed for the piece?
My friend just won with it yesterday for the annual concerto competition of our orchestra here at Mannes precollege.

If memory serves me correctly, the only wind parts in the Nielsen are for two bassoons and two horns. Your ears are very reliable Kevin!

That sounds right to me to, although I am not entirely sure. One of my all time pieces for clarinet. Does anyone know of a really good recording of it? I have one with Drucker/New York Phil on Sony, I like it but I keep thinking there has got to be a better one out there.

Thanks.
Bummer that I won't be playing this piece as part of the orchestra. Oh well.

I second the Rosengren recording. He really gets into the character of the music, but with consistently flawless clarinetistry!

the best recording of the piece i know of is jon manasse, its on a 3 concerto CD, with him playing mozart and copland concertos as well.

I'm sorry, Iplayclarinet, but I must vociferously disagree with you. The best recording of the piece is in no way the Manasse recording. The clarinet playing IS sublime, but the orchestra is horrid. The strings are incredibly out of tune and characterless to my ears. The end of the piece can be gorgeous (listen to the Olle Schill or the Rosengren), but the orchestra on the Manasse cd just butchers it. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge Jon Manasse fan and he is one of my favorite clarinetists, but can you honestly say you have listened to a bunch of other recordings and the entire recording, orchestra included, is the best? I doubt it. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else agrees with me.
