 B&H 1-10 opportunity

Hi there,

First time poster, long a lurker. :)

I've just come across a clarinet for sale in my local area. The guy has it listed as a B&H 1-10 which from searches here on the BB looks like a plastic version of the Edgeware after Boosey split the wood & plastic versions.

My question is this: the price he is asking is very reasonable & pending my review/lookover of the instrument, would this possibly make a good back up instrument? I currently have a CSO and my new Hanson T-6 Rosewood should be here this week (woo hoo!). I don't perform much, but being in the midwest I certainly do not want to take the new Hanson outside (and the CSO plays like a well... a CSO).

Opinions?

Thanks in advance,
Jami

I fully agree about that review of the T-6. Definitely want to hear your opinion on that level Hanson clarinet. Simply to learn about it a bit. (and likewise to anyone that's played their titanium model)

As for the 1-10, if the price IS reasonable, and it plays well enough, then sure, why not make it a backup? Basically, what I would look at is how well it plays versus the money that you're paying. You can't really ask us whether it's a good backup because we don't know it's condition nor how it plays.

How I would go about it (and maybe the guys who are pros might disagree or have more to add) would be to definitely try it out (hopefully in a rehearsal setting so you can see how it sounds with others, and also better hear what tuning/voicing issues it might have with respect to whoever else you might be playing with), and basically if you find yourself saying, "Wow. This sounds really good for ___ dollars" and simultaneously, "I would be comfortable playing this in a concert" then go ahead and make it your backup.

I'd be happy to provide a review of the T6 for the board. I've been tracking it's shipping progress now every few hours. I'm sure it will live up to my expectations (I hope anyhow)! :) I went ahead and placed an order from the Doctor so that I'll have everything ready for when it arrives. Now if only I can locate a lesson teacher in St. Louis...

Thanks for the input as well, on the Boosey. I'm still debating and haven't gotten out to test it yet. The man who has it "found" it in a storage locker and knows nothing about instruments, much less clarinets. He is only asking $25 for it- that was the only reason I perked up at the thought. Otherwise, I guess I can make do with my CSO as a backup. lol.

Didn't think it'd be THAT low. For the cost of a pack of reeds (plus shipping!), I say buy it regardless. Even if it turns out to be a hunk of junk, turn it into a clarinet lamp or something.

I been doing this myself with a prospective pair of clarinets that I have coming to me. Checked it three times since yesterday. I'll post about my findings later on after receiving them and testing them out (and I ALSO believe they'll live up to my expectations)
