 Lawton-style ligatures for clarinet?
Author: Chris P

Does such a good idea exist?

Geoff Lawton made what I think to be the best example of these ligatures that stayed on the mouthpiece, but is there a clarinet mouthpiece with a similar concept?

Maybe the easy way is to find an engineer to mill out the slots to take a Lawton ligature - probably a baritone one with a soprano pressure plate, or the rubber cushioned pressure plate found on the BBS models would work.

I patent-searched Lawton AND ligature, found nothing. Don

Maccaferri made a line of white nylon mouthpieces (for various sizes of clarinets and saxes) with a somewhat similar slide-into-slot ligature design. Dave Guardala uses the Lawton design on his custom sax mouthpieces too, I believe. I'm not sure if the design was patented -- if it were I'm sure Don Berger would have found the patent!

Maybe I could send my clarinet mouthpiece to the late Geoff Lawton's son to have one fitted as he's taken over the finishing now.

As far as I know, Lawton mouthpieces are no longer made at all. There's one website that talks about his son taking over, but the site hasn't been updated in 2 or 3 years, and the only place to buy Lawtons online is used on ebay or other such websites.
