 harrison ligatures
Author: russ

I had a chance to try the harrison ligatures when H was teaching at FTU(now UCF) in orlando florida. His ideas were sound and the ligatures were the first ones. I liked his cander and wit and his drive. I still have the four that i bought( HAD TO GIVE BACK THE TEST ONES) Many hours of great fun trying and fooling others players and teachers as to which ligature i was playing on. I am pleased that I was given pleasure to be one of the first few to enjoy these ligatures. Still have my bonades though.

Sadly, I believe that "H" is deceased and will not be reading the above posting. I have some of his ligs as well, and he was kind enough to send enough to my middle school, back in the 80's so that all of my students could use them for a while. We had to eventually return them--my students parents thought that they were too expensive--but they did improve my student clarinet sections tone quality, for the moment. A fine gentleman whom I always enjoyed talking with at the Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago every year. Love--and still use--his wooden reed cases.

Robert Harrison's US patent # is 3,890,873 [1975] and may be viewed by a USPTO pat. no. search, to copy it may require you to get the Alterna Tiff reader software. Dont know where my lig is at the moment !! Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Sorry about that but "old what's his name" was not in reference to Harrison.

FYI:
Copies are being made of the original Harrison Ligatures by RICO. So far, they are only available for Clarinet and Alto Sax.

Grand Concert Select H Ligatures
Inspired by the famous Harrison ligatures of the 70's and 80's, the Select H ligature provides excellent response and projection without the excessive brightness of most metal ligatures. Select from silver plate or gold lacquered.

TKS, JJM, out of an abundance of curiousity, I compared the pics of the new with the old. RICO's appears to be much stronger, having a differing structure of the H of heavier metal. Will be interested in their playing comparisons, and with the similarities [of reed contact] to the Luyben, Bonade, Gigliotti etc. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

At that price I think I'll get a dozen.

Our own Hank Lehrer is a Harrison ligature afficionado and may be able to help persons in search thereof.

Old "what's his name" is either lurking or golfing....but I know he is alive.

Hi,

Just got back from golf (and I have been lurking as well). I thought I posted to this thread a few days ago but... Here goes again.

Over the past few years, I have had some very nice emails from Shirley Harrison, Robert Harrison's widow. She is in Lincoln, NE and occassionally sells a Harrison ligature or other product on eBay.

I sent her a link to this thread and an invitation to add some facts to the Harrison-Hertz legend. I hope she joins us.

I still have (and know where it is) my gold Harrison-Hertz ligature. I like it when I need great response. It is slightly brighter than my Rovner or Luyben.

I've been thinking of buying a silver Harrison to complete my set but I don't know if there's enough difference in the sound between the gold and the silver to really merit the expense of owning two Harrisons. Anyone have one of each and can tell me if they can tell any difference?

Rebecca
