Am working on the opening 17 measures of the Shostakovich 7th symphony III movement for an upcoming audition.

Its marked presto. A question...how presto is presto? Dotted quarter = 120 or faster?

Thanks.

You should be able to play it from dotted quarter equals 88 to 132 (or as fast as you can play cleanly). In an audition I have usually played it about 120. In one audition, they asked me to do it a second time faster, and I got the gig because I could do it. I'd still rather play Shostakovich than Peter and the Wolf any day. Yikes!

 Thanks Vin.

I was afraid of that...Afraid I can't escape Peter & the Wolf either but at least I know what the tempo SHOULD be.

Regards,

Brian

Just decide it's going to be one of your best excerpts and practice it until you can't do anything but nail it.
