I'd also just like to add, that when I make a reed, I worry less about what it looks like, and more about what the crow demands. For example, if the reed feels really stuffy, then I define the tip more. If the reed feels bright and tubby (when there is no blend, but just more of a cliff) I blend it more to allow the tip vibrations further into the reed. That tippy shrillness is usually not the tip's problem, but the blend, heart, or back's problem. Instead of fussing with the tip too much I find it best to just get the entire tip very thin, making sure the blend is good while I do that. After this, it is just a question of scraping the back, and clipping. And voila! A beautiful vibrant and rich tone!
