Well, according to Jay Light in his wonderful little book, "Essays for Oboists", oboe playing is really not supposed to hurt. In fact, he says, it should feel pretty good most of the time. I have made that one of my mantras for knowing when I am doing it right.
I think the amount of resistance varies from instrument to instrument, and I know for sure it varies from reed to reed. There is such a thing as not enough resistance, or too soft a reed (think kazoo). There is also such a thing as too hard a reed (think purple in the face and gasping for breath).
I'm trying to stay somewhere in the middle.
I also think that different people may be able to use different tools to get very much the same effect. Like clarinetists -- some might like a certain setup, which another equally competent clarinetist would despise. You have to do what gives YOU the musical results you are after.
