I made my own bombarde reeds a few years ago (back before it got stolen) - I just used a couple of old tenor sax reeds, a cut-off EH staple, some thread, and just hacked away at them untill I got something resembling the reed that came with my bombarde. They worked quite well. Very crude and obnoxious sounding. Perfect. I would think one could make decent bombarde reeds - possibly using GSP bassoon cane rather than trying to shape single reeds into a double reed.
