Just to keep yourself sane in the reed search...
Before I say anything, I understand that you are in a position in which making reeds isn't really practical. I don't really know much about buying reeds these days...it's been a while. But keep these things in mind:
-*you* make the tone - not the reed. The reed has to w-o-r-k, but you can't rely on it to produce the tone quality. It comes from proper air support and embouchure placement. There may be some stuffy reeds that allow you to blow a "dark" tone, but these usually don't have very good response. And if the sound is two beats late...
-pitch: the reed is either on pitch, or it isn't. It's not a qualitative measure; it's quantitative. The best way to check the pitch is to actually play the reed in the oboe, against a tuner. Make sure you have a nice relaxed embouchure, and play a few slow scales. You shouldn't have to bite.
About "crowing" the reed:The pitch of the "crow" is not an exact science. Some people claim that it is (the theory is that the reed must crow a "C" otherwise it will be out of tune) but I use it as a rough guideline. The reed must feel easy, and allow you to play easily in tune.
