In a previous posting, I mentioned briefly the name of Berkeley. Today I was lucky enough to dig out the oboe concerto of this English composer in a place where I use to borrow CD's. Actually, there are two Berkeleys (sorry for the English readers who might well know about this): father Sir Lennox (1903-78) and son Michael (b. 1945). The CD I'm referring at is was released as the 2d volume of the so-called Berkeley Edition of the Chandos label (ref. CHAN 10022, issued in 2002). Its contents are worthwhile for oboe enthusiasts because two works feat. that instrument were recorded on it:

- Lennox Berkeley's Sinfonia Concertante, op. 84 (1972/3): a piece for oboe and chamber orchestra whose dedicatee was Janet Craxton ("one of the outstanding instrumentalists of her time, for whom Berkeley had earlier composed a Sonatina with piano and a Quartet with strings").

- Michael Berkeley's Concerto for oboe and string orchestra (1976/7). "It too was written for Janet Craxton...The final Elegy is inscribed to the memory of Benjamen Britten, Michael Berkeley's godfather, who had died in December 1976."

Both pieces are utterly "listenable", especially Michael's Concerto, a piece adorned with superb harmonies. And the mentioned Elegy is indeed particularly moving.

The soloist is Nicholas Daniel. Richard Hickox conducts the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

Hope this can be helpful to people in search of English contemporary music for the oboe.
