I have used a humistat for the last 7 years or so. In my Loree case, I put it next to the top joint (btwn joint and edge of case). In my new Yamaha custom, I have had to put it next to the bell. Else, probably in the place of the slot for the reeds. I think that putting it in the bell would just humidify the bell and not allow for much circulation, but just my best guess.
I bought one of these after my instrument (the Loree which was some 20 years old at the time) cracked immediately upon moving to Philadelphia -- the winters here are fairly dry and everyone uses very dry forced air heating. Since that initial crack, using this little gadget has kept my instrument crack-free.
I also used one in the case of my new Yamah custom oboe which (I have been told) are notorious for cracking. I have had it one year now and it made it through the winter without cracks.
Note that there is a lot of controversy about the value of humidification (detractors complain that it's not necessary and can corrode springs, etc), but I certainly find that using one of these works for me.
