Like many, I started out on Clarinet, after the horrors of Piano, and moved to oboe later. My parents only let me do it after I passed Grade 8 Clarinet, as my teacher said oboe would interfere with my clarinet playing, I guess to do with breathing and embouchure control. By the time I passed Grade 8, I absolutely despised the Clarinet, and I'm still not that fond of it...which probably sounds quite strange.
I enjoy the challenges of switching, my best example being when several members of my orchestra were ill for a concert, and I had to cover Bb Clarinet 1, Oboe 1 and 2, and Cor Anglais, oh and French Horn (as its also in F). It may sound odd, but I feel that Oboe -> Cor Anglais is harder than Cor Anglais -> Clarinet. And Eb Clarinet to Oboe is just...well, you can guess how awful it is.
Oh, and I found learning Oboe very useful, as after I started playing, I realised how sloppy I had been in tongueing on the Clarinet.
