I agree: it's nasty when your screws fail you during a performance/show. Also when you've just had your instruments worked on... makes one very nervous.
My repairperson told me that teflon coated screws have a down side (don't remember what it was, sharpness at the tip or something) and needed some filing or 'adjusting' themselves.
Face it: we've picked a really temperamental instrument. We must like a challenge or have obsessive-complusive traits to keep playing. But really, we picked the oboe because we LOVED its sound, its versatility, its overtones (akin to the human voice).... didn't we??
I hope the invenotors out there are e-listening and keep working on this delicate mechanism of this complicated instrument.
And may your screws all hold in 2011!!
