Do any of the more seasoned players have any tips on how to change from oboe to English horn in the middle of a piece?
I have to do this in one of the pieces my wind-band is playing and the English horn part starts with a solo (no other instrument is playing for the first four bars or so). The solo is not technically difficult, it starts with an ascending arpeggio: F, A, C, F, A (the first four notes are crotchets, the top A a dotted minim) and I can play it perfectly at home. However, whenever we have played it in rehearsals the top A is always flat and the first F, which is supposed to be pianissimo doesn't always sound.
I know that the problem is to do with dosing the amount of breath and after the first two bars it is fine but I seem to need these two bars to get used to the instrument.
Does any one have any suggestions as to how to be able to instantly adapt to the instrument? We have a performance in ten days time.
