Hey folks. I'm playing on a plastic Vito right now, and currently don't have the funds to upgrade to the Yamaha 881 that I want. In the meantime I'm looking at buying a new barrel and the EB extension, but will likely buy one of the two first to start, and spend the funds on the other at a later date.
If you had to choose only 1 to purchase, which would you buy first?
Also, any major differences between Fobes/Bakun/Behn/Taplin-Weir? I'm currently leaning towards Bakun (being based in Canada... Tariff wars and all..), but open to all thoughts and opinions!

I would prioritize a barrel.
As far as basic Ebs go, a Vito is not that bad overall!
I’m also in Canada. Taplin Weir had stopped making Eb barrels last time I talked with them, but they did still have some sizes remaining then. They do not have a cutback for using full length Bb reeds if that is important to you. The Backun obviously does.
If you are just wanting a different length for tuning, the Pereira 3d printed barrels are a good affordable option.

Oh! I didn't know they stopped :(
I typically use Eb reeds, but I do want a cut out to have the option to use either or, so that's good to note. I also have a gift card for L&M so I'm thinking Bakun for that reason as well.
I'll check out the Pereira one too... Though I have very limited knowledge on this brand.

I've never played a Vito but I've found that the Fobes Eb extension made all my Eefers play in better tune. I still use one on my Tosca!
If you buy one, you might ask Clark which will be the better fit for the Vito. He designates them "Buffet" or "Selmer" types. I'm betting the Buffet type for you.

What is the problem you are trying to solve with this purchase? You did not specify. A different barrel and extension solve different issues. Trying different mouthpieces should also be on your list, they matter a lot for eb.

A wooden barrel with a cutout will probably "help the tone" a little (and mean you won't have to carry clippers around to shorten your reeds). But really your best way of spending that money is 1) a good mouthpiece AND 2) some lessons.
It's quite possible to sound pretty good on a Plastic Vito, and the intonation between that and a top line instrument is probably not THAT different to be brutally honest.
A mouthpiece and lessons will have a big and lasting impact.

If it is tuning problems you are trying to fix, then looking at mouthpieces is definitely the way to go. I am lucky enough to own the E flat clarinet owned by Anton Weinberg and he made a lot of adjustments to the mouthpiece, including boring it out to get rid of the tuning problems and it plays beautifully. I have played all the E flat orchestral solos on it and have never had any complaints. It is a Noblet and I have been playing it for over forty years. A really lovely little clarinet.
