Hello everyone, first time on here. I have a brass clarinet coated in silver with a wooden mouth piece. The name on the instrument is American Scholastic, University Model, serial number D57? , a four diget S/N. I thought that all Clarinets were either wood or plastic? My daughter plays and she said it has the keys of a standard Clarinet but mad of brass. I looked through the post, etc and find anything on it. Any help would be great! Thanks

Try posting this question on the "main" bulletin board. This one focuses more on ethnic music styles as they apply to the clarinet.
For what it's worth, many older clarinets were made of metal, before plastics became cheaper. In fact, I have my ex-father-in-law's metal clarinet from the late 1950's. Wooden mouthpieces were also common decades ago.
There are some folks on the main board who could help further with your specific instrument. Go to: http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/list.html?f=1

Metal clarinets were the equivalent to plastic clarinets before they invented plastic. Metal clarinets were the cheap ones. When they invented plastic clarinets they sounded better and were cheaper, so metal clarinets stopped being made. Havent got a clue about the mouthpiece. probably old.

Not at all on all counts:
1) Metal clarinets were made as professional clarinets for many years
2) Plastic was invented well prior to the advent of metal clarinets; however, plastic was considerably more expensive than wood or metal.
3) Metal clarinets can sound just as good if not better than plastic.
