Try posting this question on the "main" bulletin board. This one focuses more on ethnic music styles as they apply to the clarinet.

For what it's worth, many older clarinets were made of metal, before plastics became cheaper. In fact, I have my ex-father-in-law's metal clarinet from the late 1950's. Wooden mouthpieces were also common decades ago.
