I am new at oboe and can only practice for about 15 minutes before I can't maintain embrouchure. Is this normal? If not, is it a reed issue or is it a mouth issue or is a wrong insrument for me issue (when I was in 6th grade I was to I had perfect cheeks for french horn?!??). Also, what is meant by "the reed should crow C?" That is not addressed in my book that I can find. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hey, I'm on my fourth year of clarinet and my second of oboe. It can be hard sometimes because I have four years of technical and music reading experience on the clarinet so it's hard to find things to play on the oboe because I can't get the technique but I can read the music. I've been experiencing the same problem. After ten minutes or so my lips just die. I don't have any advice but now you and I know we're not the only ones in this situation.

Your embouchure will adjust, and you will gradually be able to play longer and longer. Keep practicing, and you will see improvement!
An oboe reed should crow at C. When you place your lips on the reed all the way up to the cork and blow, the note that comes out should be a C.

Thank you Aaron for your comment - it is nice to know I am not the only one with that challenge. It is great to have Marie's direction --- practicing truly is a cure-all!
Thank you to Marie - Aaron and I both benefit from you encouragement and direction. Also, thank you for the detail on crowing the reed - I thought it might be that but I wasn't placing my lips all the way up to the cork - hence none of my reeds I've bought (6 in the past 2 months) have crowed at C. I look forward to retesting them!

I am becoming so discouraged about my oboe playing. I started on clarinet in the 7th grade. When I moved into highschool I started playing the oboe for concert band. Then the bassoon the next year, then the french horn, then the flute, and then back to oboe again once I reached my 11th grade year. I was never able to get private lessons cause I lived in a small town. I became worried, when college application time came around, that I would never be up to par, so I quit. But this year I picked it up again realizing that it truely is my passion. But now I am afraid that it is too late for me. I have all this musical knowledge in my head and I feel like I am unable to catch up with myself. If anyone has advice please reply. thanx
