 Low notes on alto sax
Author: asb

I'm a clarinetist. I own an alto sax which I recently played for the first time in years. I have trouble playing the low notes (C and below) without overblowing and playing the notes an octave too high. Do other people have this problem? Do I have faulty technique, or a leaky horn?

Hard to could be either.

Pads do deteriorate with age, or it could be out of adjustment, or the reed is too stiff, or the mouthpiece is too open, or your embouchure is too tight.

If an accomplished player can pop the’s you.

It may be worth visiting your local repairman to check the adjustment.

For low notes below E, use plenty of breath support to prevent them from leaping up the 8ve.

That's not to say play them louder, just give them plenty of breath support.

Have you resolved it? It can take a while to get those very low notes to pop again. Loosen the jaw and imagine you are singing low. But definitely worth having a tech look over it, particularly if it's been sat in a box for a while.
