Hi Everyone,
Just wondering who checks this board from Philly or New York. I just finished touring for 5 years on cruise ships, and I'm now trying to reconnect with the area. I'm living in Philadelphia now, but hope to work in New York in the future, once I have all the instruments to get work. If you want to write a little about what you've been doing, maybe connecting could help us all find and continue work. I finished Urinetown at Temple University last November, but other than that, I'm having trouble getting back into the scene.

I'm from New York (Long Island, specifically). I do a bit of pit work around the island. I actually have great connections with many of the high school programs. They actually pay really well (depending on the district), many pay better then most theaters I've worked for and its helped me build a large student base which right now is my main source of income while I prepare for auditions. Right now I'm working through The Music Man and then Nine and some other productions are on the table as well.
How'd you like the cruise ships? I'd considered it but I heard very mixed reviews. What line did you work for?

I worked for Royal Caribbean first, and just finished Music Directing Norwegian Cruises. Was a great way to travel the world, glad I did it right out of college. I'm 28 now, and I don't think I'd go back, but it's great in your early twenties. The musicianship varies tremendously.
I've been working some theatres in philly. Just got offered Reed 1 for "A Chorus Line" at Temple University, where we did Urinetown last October. Not much work, but at least it's some. I don't really know if teaching is right for me right now.
What are you auditioning for? What was your first instrument, and progression through the doubles?

my primary is clarinet, then double reeds (bassoon/oboe) then the saxophones.
I'm auditioning for grad schools, I took sometime after finishing my undergrad. I auditioned for the US Navy Band (I got in but was medically disqualified), did a lot of playing and began studying with a fantastic teacher in NYC.
How long are the contracts with the cruise ships?

Depends. 4 to 8 months, 6 being the most usual.
I love bassoon. I hope someday I will get the chance to pick it up.
What schools are you interested in?

In 2 weeks I head to Boston for BoCo and NEC, then to Michigan, McGill, Stonybrook and DePaul over the rest of February.
We also begin our run of the Music Man in February. Should be a hell of a month.
