 Covering oboe/english horn parts
Author: timw

I'm getting ready to play Joseph and the Amazing Dreamcoat . I am playing
Alto and Soprano Saxes as well as Soprano clarinet. Does anyone have suggestions for what instrument of the above three work best for the occasional Eng. Horn and Oboe part? There is also someone playing Flute, but obviously no double reeds. Any thoughts?

Easiest thing is to transpose them on alto and soprano. Play alto for the EH parts, soprano for the oboe. Transpose up a whole tone in both situations.

I agree with Merlin, although there may be a spot or 2 where clarinet might be a better substitute than the soprano sax. It all depends on the mood and the timbre of the rest of the orchestration.

For the most part, I'd say the soprano is very close to oboe MOST of the time. Clarinet is pretty different timbre-wise (IMHO). Of course it depends on the music, I'd be interested to hear what you end up doing!

I've always found the lower end of soprano to be virtually identical to English horn.
