 Stitching Pads
Author: OboeGoldCoast

Hi I am new to the bassoon and currently doing one up, after doing up 4 oboes.

I am wondering if stitching the bigger pads in the bassoon is still required.

The pads I will be using are Pisoni white leather with polythene membrane between leather and felt. The white leather looks like its is well bonded to the membrane thus will that make the stitching still required or not?

Also I intend to install the pads flat not bent.

Thanks Nicholas

I still stitch the larger pads as the skin does still tend to sag over time, especially on the curved top tone holes.

If you install the pads flat on the curved top tone holes how are you going to get them to seat effectively?

What about waxing the centre of pads? Is this still done?

Hello all! I am a clarinetist dabbling in the black art of double reeds. I have an elderly Puechner/Moeller bassoon with which I've been tinkering for a while, and have read the posts regarding stitching with interest. My question is: will tightly stitching the center of a large-diameter pad allow it to conform to the circumference/curvature of the boot joint, or is there an additional trick to getting a seal? For instance, French cementing a cork shim under one side of the pad, followed by temporarily wrapping a rubber-band around the pad-cup-joint assembly to create a curvature and thence a seal overnight? Or does one simply slather a dollop of beeswax and mutter a prayer wherever a leak presents itself?

There is nothing more annoying than finding a Googled solution to a problem you presented half an hour ago. I am submitting the URL below for the sake of others with similar questions. Note that the only affiliation I have with Fox Products is gratitude for their detailed answer:
