I hope you won't refuse, the next time. As pointed out, it's definitely a form of community service, and I would even go farther and say that you're helping make the world a better place, seriously. If you don't play it, then the oboe part won't get played, and I think the world would be the poorer for it, for presenting an "orchestra" with only flutes and clarinets. There needs to be at least one oboe to keep the karma in balance, or something like that.
And they can't ALL be jerks. Sooner or later, you'll encounter a conductor who will express his appreciation more.
But even so, it's still the Right Thing To Do.
And listen, if I were good enough a player, and were in a position where there was an amateur orchestra--of ANY kind--that lacked an oboe, you better believe I'd be down there in a New York minute, no matter how rude the conductor was. Actually he'd probably have to physically kick me out to get rid of me.
