Hello all!
I have a bit of a mystery which some of you might be able to solve. Last year I acquired a grenadilla oboe at a local pawn shop: no lefthand F, but it does have an F-resonance key, Bb on the bell, and a double-octave mechanism. It plays beautifully! The maker? Inscribed on the bell, and I am not misspelling here, is: Plataux, made exclusively for F.E. Olds and Sons.
I contacted Olds, and a very helpful gentleman there gave me a website featuring old Olds (sic) catalogs. I found nothing in the 1970s or late 1960s except Ambassador oboes, but in the 1960 catalog the Plataux was mentioned, and in the 1957 catalog it was listed underneath the "student" Ambassador as the O-80 "Professional" model, or Olds Plataux.
So my question is: Does anyone know who might have made these instruments for Olds, and when they were last produced? The serial number on my baby is P200+.
