The point is projection seems to be one of those terms such as "dark" that seem so obvious when one hears it, but when one is forced to define it, we often come up with different definitions. So what is your definition of "projection"? Obviously d-oboe's concept is more sound. My definition is quite different, namely being how many of the overtones produced carry to a distance (i.e. the stage to the 2nd balcony). D-oboe also suggests that his ratio can't work, but I think it strongly depends on the structure of the performance hall. I don't think we commonly assess projection from outside.
The second point is projection isn't easily measured by the person playing, and rarely can accurately be assessed, namely because projection needs to be measured from a distance. It usually takes two people; the player and the listener from different distances. So what are other ways people measure projection?
Just for the record, I own a royal myself, but believe Royals to be less projecting than the AKs, and I believe the AKs to be less projecting than the regular bores.
