When I tried a Howarth oboe several years ago, I found it difficult to place the pitch correctly in the left hand notes of the second octave. I think that it was not because of any problem with the Howarth's scale, but rather because the oboes I had been playing (Loree, Laubin) had scales with a tendency to sharpness in the upper range. Years of playing had created a tendency to use the embouchure unconsciously to lower the pitch. Hence, when I tried the Howarth, it seemed flat by comparison. However, had I selected that oboe to purchase, I have confidence that my embouchure would soon have made the adjustment and that those pitches would have become in tune. (I ended up purchasing a Marigaux 2001).
