As one of my favourite yoga gurus has said the right way is the hard way.

And he's right. To take the plunge into reedmaking, even reed adjusting, is scary. You will make mistakes. However it's something that should be welcomed as a learning experience. After all, you have to start somewhere.

And after you have made some miserable mistakes (i.e. sabotaging your last reed 15 minutes before a show - tough!) don't get discouraged. The feeling of confidence in creating and adjusting reeds, playing the oboe - being an oboist!- doesn't just show up on the doorstep. It is earned. The more you do it, the more you try things figuring out what works and what doesn't, the more confidence you will have. Even if you are only an amateur, you still deserve to have confidence. It's a question of going out and finding it.
