"Fruitwood" is often cited, and I guess that often means pear, but in the last five years I have had some experience with "flowering plum" and I can see how various <i>Prunus</i> species might also make good instruments. The wood is quite hard and very fine-grained. The source was a tree in my backyard which I cut down and seasoned for several years, and have recently been making small projects out of it. Unfortunately I wasn't careful about how I seasoned it, and it wasn't too large to begin with, so I didn't have enough to make an oboe out of it.....
