I complained about the same problem at Mack camp years ago, and Mr. Mack suggested quickly liftling then replacing the LH first finger to facilitate slurring to high D.
He also said to try to make reeds that would slur easily w/o the trick.
Now and then I get reeds that do it easily but usually still use his tip, at least on my old oboe that does not have a high-d facilitator.
If a reed won't slur to d3 using the quick vent trick, I would reject it from that particular performance anyway.
(Desperation move: tongue the d in the most legato possible fashion.....using the smallest contact with just the very corner of the reed... last ditch, but at least better than cracking the note.)
