It's a little difficult for me to understand musical school system in other countries... I mean, do you have specialized schools? And where are you from?
If your upper register is puny maybe you should try to find better positions (anyway you said you have not problems anymore)
I feel the same as you with my sax and oboe. I really love oboe, the same feeling I have never felt for my sax, expecially now that I've meet Bobo (my oboe's name :D)...
