Re: Lessons -- As a Learner or as a Teacher

Hey, Susan.

As a teacher, I find that I actually follow, roughly, the way that my lessons went as a student. I don't know if it's a good or a bad thing. It's just the way I know, I guess.

For my beginners, I do a 30-minute lesson. We start with basic scales, some long tones if needed, and then move to the book they're using in school (usually Standard of Excellence). We usually end by just running a band piece or something to end on a good note.

For my older students, we start with...

major, minor, whole-tone, and chromatic scales, thirds, arpeggios full range (10 mins)
Rubank book (20 minutes)
If they've finished the Rubanks, I use etude books and repertoire.
Duet (10 minutes)
If they've got an audition coming up, more focus usually is put on what they need to have prepared.

However, I try to taylor the lessons to what the kids want. I do some jazz with some kids, band music, pop stuff, etc. They do what I want, I work with them on what they want. It keeps them coming back for more, and helps them get better.

Erik
