My wife is a Ph.D. musicologist and computer person and tells exactly the same IBM story. It certainly has something to do with the mathematical nature of rhythm and the development of an analytical mind. But, I think, more to do with the fact that mastering a muscial instrument requires learning a complex skill over a period of years, and cooperating with groups of other players. Those same skills needed for computer programming.
