A few years back I produced a number of synthesizer accompaniment tapes for oboe and bassoon. I called it Practice Plus and for a limited time marketed it via IDRS publications in a cassette tape format.

I originally made midi files in the midi recorders of the era (circa 1986) and then realized them into synth accompaniments for playing back on a home stereo.

Editing was pretty limited back then and the synths were primitive compared to today's fast chip sampling things, but still they are fun to play along with/to.

I am pretty busy with current recording efforts but if someone on this BBoard would care to post the sound files for download, I would be happy to send a CD with the parts.

I did:

Mozart Oboe Concerto

Mozart Oboe Quartet

Marcello Oboe Concerto ( in c and d)

Handel Sonatas 1 & 2 (per Everybody's Favorites)

and a few other trio sonatas, but those listed above I've converted to a CD format already.

I would be interested in hearing how players would play back, meaning on a PC or on a home stereo or iPod device. These are no longer midi format so you cannot edit tempos, etc. For cadenzas I placed 4 bars of rests in time. So players need to either hit pause and resume or be content with a very short cadenza...

Actually, I think I'd recommend iPod playback of an MP3 file. The full quality files do sound better, but the iPod sounds pretty decent using the better quality MP3 file formats. Playing with the buds a little loose in the ear allows plenty of oboe into the mix and does not distort the player's perceptions too much. And plugging an iPod into a home system is easy as getting $20 cable to hook it up.

Just a thought. I no longer market the tapes and going back and redoing it all in modern synth samples is not economically feasible at this time.

Honestly, the people who bought Practice Plus tapes either loved them or hated them. The vast majority enjoyed them but there was not really a middle ground opinion. I still use them and it beats the heck out of playing alone with a metronome, at least.
