extreme heat (i.e. coffee/tea) drains out the nourishing organic matter of cane which is critical to the fibers and maintaining cellular structure. This material can be seen if you leave cane in water overnight at the water becomes cloudy and dirty. Thus, coffee and tea can "cook" your reed in a way.

Of course this doesn't really stop me, since I make billions of reeds everyday. the 2nd oboist looked at my reeds the other day and commented at how old they look. I just told her they're coffee stained.
