I have one of hte M-Audio devices that I use at school all the time. Its fantastic. the mic that comes with it is very functional and no extra high tech mic is needed, though if you wanted to splurge, you could.

It is even easier to simply 'click and drag' the audio tracks to your computer and into the bundled software called "Audacity" and then simply burn them to a CD.

I HIGHLY recommend this device by M-Audio (Microtrack I think?). Its great and very well worth the money. Some places even offer a special deal around now with included card.

ps. I use this device to record both bands and soloists -- great sound feedback and the phantom power works very well! The only thing you have to be careful about is that 'some" mics WON"T work with the device because of hte phantom power. Best off to get the device and check the paperwork to see the recommended list of mics that can be used.
