Hello silly goose GMac.
I never bashed the Renard at all...I said I didn't know anything about it. LOL...anyway...back to lien561
I still think that wood is the way to go. If I hear or find of anything I will let you know. Whereabouts are you from?
As long as you warm the instrument under your arms there shouldn't be any worries of cracking. "knock on wood" my oboe has never cracked, and rosewood is more inclined to cracking than grenadilla wood. Just be sure to spend enough time warming it up...don't be rushed. Hold the upper joint (the most important to warm up - the bottom joints really don't matter that much) under your arm for 10 minutes min...and this will help you along your journeys. If you can in winter, wrap a warm blanket (fresh out of the dryer) around the oboe before packing it in to travel. I use a special "bear" that was made for me for my aches and pains in joints, to put in the microwave that I warm up and put in the bag with the oboe to help keep it warm while travelling.
I hope this helps...
I know www.mmimports.com (Midwest Musical Imports) have a selection of used instruments, and they are usually being sold by professional oboists in the states. I also know OboeWorks has another selection of used oboes, and I know that because I sold mine through them. www.oboeworks.com
happy oboe shopping!
