There are loads of variation between the various styles, makes, and materials used in staples.
There is some debate about what the difference between nickel sliver, bronze ( and Gold) staples does to the sound quality - I generally would say that there is not much variation in tone.
I have found that the greatest difference is Price $$ rather than a major difference in sound quality between materials.
You will find though that often makers produce better consistancy with Nickel Sliver staples than Brass - Perhaps this has to do with the manufacturing process ?
With the Non-Cork Staples, Chudnow etc., which are very well manufactured, they will last almost indefinatley ( which is a good money saver for all of us $$).
There is most definatley a noticable difference in comparison to corked staples in regards to sound quality.
I find them much more "brassy" in sound and make a bigger sound than cork staples, as the vibrations of the reed are not muted by the cork in any fashion. I think long scrape (USA) players have found them to be a good orchestral staple, as it allows for a larger sound when required.
I had a small conversation with Mark about this in 2003 and he seamed to think this was one of the advantages ( Though just email and ask him ??)
My ganeral advice with staples is no matter what you end up using - make sure there well made and stick to one style/size at a time, for consistancy in pitch and tone.
