Hello.
Do you know what kind of shape the davie cane is? For ex. is it a Gilbert -1? You might want to try Gilbert +1, Mack-Pfeiffer, or and Adam Ruth shape. They are wider and are easier to tie on. I would normally tie my reeds at 73-74 - especially on the Mack-Pfeiffer and with cooler weather, however I am unsure where you are and I am in Canada, so 73mm might be your best bet. I wouldn't tie much lower than that because you are not leaving enough room to make the tip of the reed. I know that Midwest Musical Imports (www.mmimports.com) have some shaped cane and I think you can specify what you would like. Hope that this helps you in search of wider cane!
