I have seen Mr. Mack make the fifth one in a concert, and it was the best!
I went to hear Cleveland play Tombeau and at the interval there was Mr. Mack, scraping away, his pants covered in reed shavings. He sounded gorgeous!
I try to make three reeds a day and play on the winner. Five gives you a better shot, but three seems workable to me. The other two get to live out their lives on my desk, until they are soaked up for students and it is usually at that point that I realise that that reed was not so bad and I regret giving it to them.
The key is to work fast and go on auto pilot. Ms. Douvas does the same thing; the fifteen minute reed as she calls it. I think it helps to keep you on your toes and you know that a good reed is never two days away!
