My son had the good fortune of being in an ensemble coached by John Mack for the past 6 semesters. We were told we would be lucky if he got one semester with Mack. His group was looking forward to studying with Mack again this next fall.
When I got the call about his death, my son was quite upset. My thoughts and prays are with the family and with all those who will no longer have the good fortune of his incredible musical insight, his jokes and his unique way of getting the very best out of musicians.
Although I am not a musican, I hope I can pass on that your community now has a responsibilty to pick up where he left off, and to try to continue in his footsteps. Our success or failure is not judged by the buildings named after us, but by the memories in the hearts and minds of men (and women). I'd guess Mack was very successful.
