Good morning
I currently own an early 1980s Howarth S2 (thumbplate only) d’amore, but have been interested by a similar aged dual system Marigaux. However, there’s a note from the seller about a while/not a crack to the wood below the D key, to the south east of looking face on.
I just wondered if this is a problem, non-standard etc.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Chris

Hello everyone,
Regarding this oboe d'amore it would be nice to see a picture of the whole instrument. My impression is that this instrument use to have a low C (Do) "banana" key, which was removed and a left hand low C# (Do#) was installed in its place; so whatever "crack" is there is where one of the posts for the "banana" key was.
Best regards,
Jeremías Gramcko

That's the RH3 fingerplate - not the D key (a vague term that needs to be dropped as it can mean both anything and nothing at the same time). This one has the automatic D#-E trill mechanism whereby the Eb pad cup will close when RH3 is released when doing a D#-E trill using the LH Eb key.
It's had the banana key removed and the pillar holes filled in as it's had a LH C# key added, so those are most likely scratches or open vessels on the surface of the wood. Even if it was a crack (and not very likely in that location) it's hardly an issue and easy enough to deal with - it's just cosmetic (like the filled in pillar holes) and won't have any impact on the playability.

Thank you so much for the detail and apologies for the typos in my original message. It should have said hole and and no crack. I am very tempted by it, but love the sound of my Howarth S2, just doesn’t have the same key work. I might try it.
Best wishes
Chris

You can always have your S2 d'amore converted into an S3 (ring key conservatoire/dual system with side Ab-Bb trill key/high F# key) which is less costly than buying another d'amore.

I did end up getting it as I couldn’t resist, but it needs a little love and servicing. My usual repair guy might be able to do all that’s required and taking it into London will be expensive I think!o
