Like him i was a clarinetist before. The switching process is very very tiresome and i took a lot of effort and time to get going on the oboe.

Firstly the student should not get confused with playing the oboe with the clarinet....it is very different in terms of air flow, embouchure, holding position etc. The usual problem with students like him and me (switching students) is that at the beginner stage we tend to put too much lip into the mouth. The embouchure should form with an O shape style and with lessen support of the teeth from both sides, the tip of the reed(very tip) should rest on the very frontal half of the lips. When closed, the student should roll in a tiny bit of the lip to form a steady embouchure. There should be little but equal pressure throughout the lip. The common saying that the face should look frown when a good embouchure is formed is not necessarily true, but the lower jaw at least be lowered down more than usual.

A good crow on the reed itself should sound very low, as in the pitch of the sound should be quite low in general. A high pitch tells that the student is either applying to much pressure on the sides of the reed (this of course also happens to make the sound sharp) or he/she might be taking too much reed into the mouth cavity. Only the tip of the reed should be in to mouth cavity.

If i'm wrong please correct me. Hope this helps. I'll try to give more information as i know more about his playing.
