Nicholas,
I can't tell you how many years it will take because I'm not there yet myself, but I can tell you that with determination and practice, it may come sooner than you think.
I'm also an adult who never has played a musical instrument in the past until 2 years ago when I started the oboe. I did know how to read music a little, and that helped. But I have been determined to learn, and after much practice, I can see that I am progressing quite well.
I agree that it helps to have a goal. For me, I am able to play in my children's homeschool band. The band director is a retired public school teacher who started a homeschool band program 6 years ago. The program now has about 300 students in beginning, intermediate, and advanced bands. There are 10 or so adult "students" in the band as well, most who have played their instrument years ago in high school.
Playing in the band has given me a reason to practice. (Also to keep up with the high school boy who has been playing oboe for 4 years---- yes, I can *almost* play as well as he). :-) Besides, playing in the band is sooooo much fun. We will perform our Christmas concert this week and then on to new music. Some of the spring music we'll be doing includes Holst's 1st Suite, Fiddler on the Roof, and Armed Forces Salute.
Well, now I'm rambling.... but all this to say that I think it's great that you, Nicholas, are considering taking up the oboe. I would encourage you to go for it.
